Singles Not Released On An Album
Written by Rebecca Lynn Howard
Released November 4, 2003
Current Label: MCA Nashville
"I Need A Vacation" is from Rebecca's unreleased MCA Nashville album
"Laughter And Tears".
I work all day at a break-neck run,
Just to come home to another pile of work to be done.
An' all I wanna do is flop on the couch and die.
Baby comes in: he's give out too.
I say: "It's pizza or nothin', an' Trixie's all out of dog food."
I could just break right down and cry.
I need a vacation from my life.
Me an' my husband, we need a wife.
Somebody who's sole ambition is laundry.
I wanna fall asleep on my patio swing,
While somebody else does the dishes an' cleans.
Merry Arches could stroll through the autoplay, softly.
Wouldn't even have to leave 2523, General George Patton Drive:
But I need a vacation from my life.
Don't even get me started on Saturdays,
All I do is rearrange the clutter,
Yeah, I invented shabby chic.
Who wants to mow when it's so dang hot?
Me an' baby got a theory 'bout our little half-acre lot:
If it blooms, it's not a weed!
Oh, I need a vacation from my life.
Oh, I need a vacation from my life.
Me an' my husband, we need a wife.
Somebody who's sole ambition is laundry.
I wanna fall asleep on my patio swing,
While somebody else does the dishes an' cleans.
Merry Arches could stroll through the autoplay, softly.
Wouldn't even have to leave Mid-state, Tennessee,
2523, General George Patton Drive:
But I need a vacation from my life.
Whoa, I need a vacation from my life.
That's right.

"What A Shame" is from Rebecca's unreleased MCA Nashville album "Laughter And Tears".
'Phone rings, 2 a.m.
Oh no, here we go again.
It's you on my caller ID,
In the middle of a catastrophe.
How many times can your heart break?
I've heard all that I can take.
What a shame the whole world didn't stop turning,
It's burning you up inside.
Too bad you're so full of pride.
What a pity nobody understands you:
A complicated man who,
Knows he's always right.
What a shame, what a pity, what a pity, what a shame.
What a shame, what a pity, what a pity, what a shame.
Like Tom Cruise and Russell Crow,
Hollywood's where you should go.
Lord knows, you've got the act:
A drama king and that's a fact.
How many times can one sky fall?
I can't take another call.
Some people can never learn and that's too bad.
You can't get it through your head, I don't want you back.
What a shame.
(Oh, oh, oh, oh, what a pity, what shame.
What a pity, what a shame.)
What a shame.
Burning you up inside.
Too bad you're so full of pride.
What a pity nobody understands you:
A complicated man who,
Knows he's always right.
What a shame, (Shame, shame.)
Lord, Lord, (Lord, Lord.)
What a pity.
What a shame, (Shame.)
Lord, Lord,
What a pity.
What a shame, what a pity, what a pity, what a shame.
What a shame, what a pity, what a pity, what a shame.

Wisteria vine is for climbin'
Every sunset was a watercolor
At the promise of a perfect summer
A blue-eyed boy with a red Trans Am
We spent hours on his hood, just laughin'
In between the moonlight dancin'
And it was way too short but oh so sweet
Don't know what it was to him
But it was love to me
That's why I hate Pontiacs
Black vinyl seats, yeah
And Cracker Jacks
The plastic rings
They play it back
That goodbye scene
On a warm September night
It's why I hate river roads
With the windows down
And Tupelo
Oh, I hate that town
'Cause all I know
Is that's where he was bound
And he never did come back
It's why I hate Pontiacs
I filed away my wounded pride
I found someone and loved again
Never take a trip to way back when
'Til the radio plays a certain song
And it's like a finger on the trigger
Some old hurts, they just hurt bigger
I might have gotten past it long ago
But parts of yesterday
They get tattooed on your soul
That's why I hate Pontiacs
Black vinyl seats, yeah
And Cracker Jacks
The plastic rings
They play it back
That goodbye scene
On a warm September night
It's why I hate river roads
With the windows down
And Tupelo
Oh, I hate that town
'Cause all I know
Is that's where he was bound
And he never did come back
It's why I hate Pontiacs
That's why I hate Pontiacs
Black vinyl seats
We were maniacs
So wild and free
'Til he took it back
That he loved me
And he drove off like the wind
It's why I hate Scorpios
You can't tie 'em down
And Tupelo
Lord, I hate that town
'Cause all I know
Is that's where he was bound
And he never did come back
It's why I hate Pontiacs
That's why I hate Pontiacs

No One'll Ever Love Me
Written by Shari Ann Baker, Christi Baker and Kelly Shiver

You taught me how to whistle and how to tie my shoes,
And how to talk to Jesus in the darkness of my room.
You held my hand when I got stitches,
When one of Tommy Tyler's pitches hit my face.
One time I stole from your purse, then I lied and made it worse.
But you loved me anyway.
Growing up, I remember your amazing grace.
I still feel your arms around me now and then.
I miss you wavin' from the front door:
I can't drive by there anymore,
'Cause no one'll ever love me,
Like that again.
You sent me all those letters when I went off to school.
I should've written you back but I was too busy being cool.
Funny how I couldn't wait,
To get you on the phone to say: "Mom, I'm in love."
You were there whether or not I gave a little or a lot:
It was enough.
I can still hear you sayin' you're proud of me.
And I remember thinkin' of you as my friend.
I miss you wavin' from the front door:
I can't drive by there anymore,
'Cause no one'll ever love me,
Like that again.
I guess I miss you more today cCause it's your birthday,
And I couldn't bear for you to spend it here alone.
Wish I could say this to your face,
Instead of talkin' to your name carved in stone.
I can still hear you sayin' you're proud of me.
And I can feel your arms around me, now and then.
There's a hole in my heart in the shape of you, Mom.
'Cause no one'll ever love me:
No one'll ever love me,
Like that again.

If I could only
win your love
I'd make he most of everything
I'd proudly wear your wedding ring
My heart would never stray one dream away
Oh how can I ever say
How I crave your love when you're gone away
Oh how can I ever show
How I burn inside when you hold me tight
If I could only win your love
I'd give my all to make it live
You'll never know how much I'd give

"It’s about taking things for granted in life, and how people don’t appreciate the simple things" Jim Brickman
Hey
Time won't wait
Life goes by
Every day's a brand new sky
Every tear comes to dry
All that really matters in this crazy world
Is you and I together baby
Just remember
The first leaves off the tree
The way you look at me
A thousand chiming church bells ring
The simple things are free
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
How I love the simple things
The simple things just are
So....
Here we go
Let's just dance
Teach my soul to take this chance
Put my heart in your hands
Out of all the moments that we leave behind
Turn around and tell me baby
we'll remember
The thunder and the rain
The way you say my name
After all the clouds go by
The simple things remain
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
How I love the simple things
The simple things just are
The ocean and the sky
The way we feel tonight
I know that it's the love that brings
The simple things to life
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
I love the way the simple things
The simple things just are

If you are sincere
when you say you don't care,
That our love is just a memory,
If the love that we knew won't bother you,
Darlin you're stronger than me.
For if still lovin you means I'm weak, then I'm weak,
For I still fall apart when we speak or we meet.
If the love that we knew won't bother you,
Darlin you're stronger than me.
If you can have fun with some other one
With no thought of what used to be,
If it's easy to say that it's better this way,
Darlin you're stronger than me.
For if still lovin you means I'm weak, then I'm weak,
For I still fall apart when we speak or we meet.
If the love that we knew won't bother you,
Darlin you're stronger than me.

I don't love him anymore
just ask all my friends
I've told them and I tell them
time & time again
I dont have no regrets
no I'm not that kind
Honestly he's the last thing on my mind
When the day turns into dusk
And the shadows start to fall
And this empty bed's as big as Arkansas
And when I'm driftin' off to sleep
Something in my broken heart rewinds
He's the last thing
He's the last thing on my mind
Now, rushing through the day
I might seem improved
There isn't time to second guess my foolish moves
No I can only see
Once the lights go out
What it is I can live
with and without
When the day turns into dusk
And the shadows start to fall
And this empty bed's as big as Arkansas
And when I'm driftin' off to sleep
Something in my broken heart rewinds
He's the last thing
He's the last thing on my mind
When the day turns into dusk
And the shadows start to fall
And this empty bed's as big as Arkansas

Released October 2, 2001
Written by Rebecca Lynn Howard, Robin Lee Bruce, Trey Bruce
"When we met for a songwriting session, none of us had any ideas. So we
started playing this funky, greasy melody, and all of a sudden Trey says,
'You hold the pole and I'll try to met him.' I totally freaked out and the
song snowballed from there. It was one of those times when we didn't let the
right side of the brain overtake the left side." Rebecca Lynn Howard
You hold the pole and I'll try to net him
I'll wade out up to my waist
Been standin' on the bank all day hot and sweaty
We can't let this one get away
Take your time, let the line sink to the bottom
Cause we sure don't want it to break
But if the fish stop bittin' and it gets hotter
It sure feels good out here in the water
Baby just come on and jump in here with me
You can leave your clothes on or underneath that tree
It's a whole lot cooler, I really think you 'oughta
It sure feels good, feels good out here in the water
Just tie him off to the hitch on the bumper
Let that bad boy fight himself
If he gets loose then we'll hook another
But while we've got a little daylight left
Forget the fish, we can dish all of our troubles
Right here in this lake
It gets deeper out a bit further
It sure feels good out here in the water
Baby just come on and jump in here with me
You can leave your clothes on
Or underneath that tree
It's a whole lot cooler
I really think you 'oughta
Sure feels real good
Baby just come on and jump in here with me
You can leave your clothes on
Or underneath that tree
It's a whole lot cooler
I really think you 'oughta
Sure feels real good, feels real good, out here in the water
Out here in the water
(Feels real good) out here in the water

Softly and Tenderly (Acoustic)
Album: Providence
Released February 4, 2003
Current Label: MCA Nashville
Written by Rebecca Lynn Howard and Trey Bruce
“My best friend went through a divorce about two-and-a-half years ago and the idea sparked from the hardships that she had to endure. Before I wrote it, I called her and I was like ‘Look, I have this idea and I won’t write it if you don’t want me to.’ She was like, ‘I don’t care. That’s my past and I’m moving on. If you can benefit from it, great, go ahead. I’m glad someone can benefit from the crap that I’ve got to go through.’
The first time my friend heard it, she laughed her head off. She was like, ‘I cannot believe that you wrote this about me. I’m going to be famous!’” Howard recalls with a robust laugh. “After they got divorced, she moved back home and she called me the first time Dallas [radio] played it: ‘They played your song and you’re number five on the top five at five!’ She’s told all her friends, ‘This is about me!’ So, she’s enjoying the success.”
Originally Faith Hill had put “Forgive” on hold to record. But when Faith heard Rebecca wanted to release the song as the first single on her latest album. Faith kindly gave the song back to Rebecca and when “Forgive” was a hit on the charts Faith sent Rebecca an orchid to congratulate her on the success.
“You can’t (forget). We’re not geared to do that. It’s something that we should do and it’s a good thing to forgive people, I think, but that is so against our nature as human beings, and more so, it is [against our nature] to forget. People say ‘forgive and forget.’ Well, that ain’t possible. Maybe I’ve never been done dirty enough to know what it really is to forgive somebody wholly about something. But to forget it? Unless I got amnesia, I ain’t forgetting it, and nobody else is going to either.” Rebecca Lynn Howard when asked “Can you ever just forgive?”
I always said that'd be it
That I wouldn't stick around
If it ever came to this
Here I am so confused
How am I supposed to leave
When I can't even move
In the time that it would've took to say
"Honey I'm home, how was your day"
You dropped a bomb right where we live
And just expected me to forgive
Well that's a mighty big word
For such a small man
And I'm not sure I can
'Cause I don't even know now who I am
It's too soon for me to say forgive
I should ask but I won't
Was it love or just her touch
'Cause I don't think I want to know
So get you some things and get out
Don't call me for a day or two
So I can sort this out
Well you might as well've ripped the life
Right out of me, right here tonight
When through the fallen tears you said
Can you ever just forgive
Well that's a mighty big word
For such a small man
And I'm not sure I can
'Cause I don't even know now who I am
It's too soon for me to say forgive
Well you know what they say
Forgive and forget,
Relive and regret
Forgive, well that's a mighty big word
For such a small man
And I'm not sure I can
'Cause I don't even know now who I am
It's too soon for me to say forgive
It's too soon for me to say
Forgive

Softly and Tenderly (Acoustic )
Album: The Apostle
Released February 10, 1998
Current Label: Rising Tide
Written by Will L. Thompson
When sixteen, Rebecca was asked if she knew any hymns off a list of about one hundred different hymns, by the president of Rising Tide Records. She responded that she knew them all and had him pick one. In only a few a takes Rebecca recorded a demo of "Softly and Tenderly". Rebecca says, "We got a call back immediately. They loved it. I was blown away. The take I had recorded was the one they used." Later, they requested Rebecca to add the pedal organ to the instrument sound. Having no experience with the pedal organ, she practiced with the instrument for fifteen minutes before making another version of the song, which is on the sound track for “The Apostle”. "It was an awesome experience. It was just a fluke thing." Rebecca comments.
Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling for you and for me
See, on the portals he's waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me
Come home, come home
Ye who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home
O for the wonderful love he has promised
Promised for you and for me
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon
Pardon for you and for me
Come home, come home
Ye who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home
Calling, O sinner, come home

Pretty as an
angel from the day that she was born
Skin as fair as Lily's hair, as golden as the corn
They knew that she was special from the moment she first cried
She was a mountain angel certified
She was her momma's baby, she was her daddy's pride
Good at home, at church and school, at everything she tried
Everybody's darlin' led a charmed and peaceful life
The perfect mountain angel 'til he arrived
And ohh, she
fell so deeply
Ooh, she couldn't stop
She gave herself to him, milled it completely
He lifted her so high he let her drop
She gave up
everything for him that mattered in her life
All the others that had loved her and she vowed to be his wife
She dreamed of bearing children in an ivy-covered house
The mountain angel's sunshine turned to clouds
The wicked handsome stranger left the way he came
Broke her heart and broke her mind
She never was the same
They say he was the devil
That had come to steal her soul
She never loved another it was told
They say she had a baby
Some say that it had died
They say it's just as well
As it had been the devil's child
They say good conquers evil
But here, evil won the prize
So the mountain angel took to the wild
And ooh, she
couldn't take it
Years passed and she had long since lost her mind
She waited for him as her beauty faded
Her parents died from grief before their time
She tried to
gather pieces of her life, they wouldn't fit
Beside the tiny grave deep in the woods is where she'd sit
Talking to the child, herself, to him, who knew for sure
Possessed they say by satan's insane lure
High a'top the mountain, for years they say she's seen
Looking down upon the town where she had once been queen
She'd sneak around the playground, watch the little children play
They'd see the crazy lady then run away
They say she roamed these hills for years, wearing not a stitch
The lovely mountain angel now thought to be a witch
She made those wailing mournful sounds
That you could hear for miles
Long after she laid down upon her baby's grave and died
And ooh, her
ghost is callin'
She's waiting for the ones that she adored
Through spring and summer, fall when snow is fallin'
Her spirit roams these hills forever more
The mountain angel's voices ever more

"I just love this song and the title. The girl in the song goes to a rodeo
and falls in love with this guy who's a typical free-spirited cowboy. She's
drawn into his world and his lifestyle and he breaks her heart because
nothing's gonna hold him down. It's a very country song. It has such a
haunting melody and lyrics that paint a vivid picture of how it is to
experience a broken heart." Jessica Andrews

I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners
Album: Inside Out
Artist: Trisha Yearwood
Released June 5, 2001
Written by Rebecca Lynn Howard and Trey Bruce
Rebecca wrote “I Don’t Paint Myself into Corners” with Patty Loveless in mind thinking, “Nobody knows Patty Loveless songs better than I do” But Rebecca found her self ecstatic when Trisha asked if it would be ok if she recorded the song. Rebecca recalls her response, “I almost went into cardiac arrest. I said, ‘Are you kidding me? Do I mind? What kind of question is that? You’ve got the best set of vocal cords in this town. You can sing anything I’ve got. You don’t even have to ask."
“That’s very weird. I guess ‘weird’ is a good word, right? Actually, it’s like a full-circle moment. Do you ever watch Oprah? She talks about full-circle moments all the time, and that was definitely one for me. When I first came to this town, I was a little girl singing ‘She’s in Love With the Boy.’ So Trisha was it! I always wanted to be a vocalist like her.” Rebecca Lynn Howard remaking on Trisha Yearwood recoding songs she wrote.
It took a while for me to see things as they were
In the light of truth
It wasn't you, it was me
I let myself get used to drowning in the hurt
Against the wall
Who'd of thought, it was me
From there I couldn't even look over my shoulder
I kicked down all the walls and started all over
And I don't paint myself into corners anymore
In a brittle heart of clay
I threw my brushes away
The tools of the trade that chained your memory to me
Are out the door
I don't paint myself into corners anymore
When you left you left me with no other choice at all
But to sink
To my knees, and cry
I never knew just how far a soul could fall
Like a rock
I couldn't stop, didn't try
I locked myself behind shades of misery
But when I let you go, I set myself free
And I don't paint myself into corners anymore
In a brittle heart of clay
I threw my brushes away
The tools of the trade that chained your memory to me
Are out the door
I don't paint myself into corners anymore
The tools of the trade that chained your memory to me
Are out the door
I don't paint myself into corners anymore

We didn't know what hit us
We had to stop and catch a breath
Like a brick wall in a train tunnel
Scared us half to death
You'd have thought we could've seen it coming
The way the two of us were runnin'
I guess that's the way it is
If you've never been
Hit by love
Struck by lightning
Bound forever, there's no denying that
All we want is everything that makes love like this come true
Oh, emotionally on our knees
It took a moment to believe
But there we were, the two of us
Hit by love
Looking back is easy
If you've got memories like ours
We crashed like two headlights
And we're still seeing stars
And I don't have to stop and wonder
Where we'll find that rollin' thunder
Cause my heart knows you and me
Are always gonna be
Hit by love
Struck by lightning
Bound forever, there's no denying that
All we want is everything that makes love like this come true
Oh, emotionally on our knees
It took a moment to believe
But there we were, the two of us
Hit by love
Hit by love
Struck by lightning
Bound forever, there's no denying that
All we want is everything that makes love like this come true
Oh, emotionally on our knees
It took a moment to believe
